Minimising off- farm impacts in catchments

Nitrogen and Phosphorus are potential environmental contaminants as well as crucial drivers of production.

Farms are often part of an “open system”. Nutrients are imported as fertiliser and stock-feed and exported as produce or lost to the environment. With of fertiliser prices continuing to rise and with some waterways at risk of nutrient saturation, this program is looking at innovative ways of 'closing' the nutrient loop.

The current phase of research aims to:

  • Better understand the impact of nutrient losses to the environment and how to minimise them
  • Optimise the productive value of nutrients and reduce imports.
