Dairy in the region

Around 2,300 dairy farmers produce 2.2 billion litres of milk annually. This represents some 34% of Victoria’s production, and 22.5% of national milk output.

  • The average farm in Northern Victoria milks around 235 cows, producing 1.45 million litres annually.
  • 99% of dairy farmers in the region have been affected by drought
  • The dairy industry directly employs around 7,500 people in Northern Victoria, in both farming and processing.
  • There are 16 dairy factories in the region including milk processing, dairy product manufacturing and milk collection plants.
  • Dairy companies manufacturing product in the region include Murray Goulburn Cooperative, Tatura Milk Industries, Parmalat, Fonterra Milk Australia, National Foods, and Unilever.
  • The estimated value of farmgate production in the region in 2006/07 was around $714 million.
  • The value of dairy exports exported from the region is $690 million.
