Dairy in the region

  • Around 1,700 dairy farmers produce 2 billion litres of milk annually. This represents 33% of Victoria’s production and 22% of national milk output.
  • The average farm in Western Victoria milks around 290 cows, producing 1.76 million litres annually.
  • The dairy industry directly employs around 7,200 people in Western Victoria, in both farming and processing.
  • Dairy companies manufacturing product in the region include Fonterra Milk Australia, Murray Goulburn Cooperative, National Foods, Dairy Farmers and Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory.
  • The estimated value of farmgate production in the region in 2006/07 was $685 million.
  • The value of dairy exports exported from the region is $662 million.
