Dairy in the region

  • Around 1,850 Gippsland dairy farmers produce 1.9 billion litres of milk annually. This represents 33% of Victoria’s dairy production or 22% of national milk output.
  • The average Gippsland farm milks around 257 cows, producing 1.51 million litres annually.
  • The dairy industry directly employs over 4,000 people on farms and a further 3,250 in the processing sector.
  • Currently in Gippsland there are 12 dairy factories in operation collecting and processing milk, with one major source being the Murray Goulburn Cooperative located in Maffra.
  • Other major companies operating in the region include Fonterra Milk Australia, Parmalat and National Foods.
  • The value of farm milk production from the Gippsland region was valued at $690 million in 2006/07.
  • The FOB value of dairy product exports produced from the region is estimated to be $665 million.
