Dairy in the region

  • Around 600 Southern & Central NSW dairy farmers produce 564 million litres of milk annually. This represents 67% of New South Wales’ dairy production and 7.7% of national milk output.
  • The average Southern & Central NSW farm milks around 217 cows, producing 1.41 million litres, or 100,400 kg of milk solids annually.
  • 80% of the regions’ dairy farmers have been affected by drought or flood.
  • The dairy industry directly employs over 2,400 people on farms and a further 1,100 in the processing sector.
  • The value of farm milk production from the Southern & Central NSW region was valued at $264 million in 2006/07.
  • The FOB value of dairy product exports produced from the region is estimated to be $150 million.
