Dairy in the region

  • Around 1,000 South East Queensland & Northern NSW dairy farmers produce 553 million litres of milk annually. This represents 6.2% of national milk output.
  • The average dairy farm in South East Queensland & Northern NSW milks around 158 cows, producing 890,000 litres annually.
  • 87% of the regions’ dairy farmers have been affected by drought or flood.
  • The dairy industry directly employs over 2,670 people on farms and a further 1,870 in the processing sector.
  • Milk production in the region has been in steady decline since 2000.
  • Major companies operating in the region include Dairy Farmers, National Foods, Parmalat and Norco Cooperative.
  • The value of farm milk production from the South East Queensland & Northern NSW region was valued at $230 million in 2006/07.
  • The FOB value of dairy product exports produced from the region is estimated to be $85 million.
