  • Total milk production for the region in 2007/08 will reach about 73 million litres which is less than 1% of national milk production.
  • The average farm in the region is milking about 206 cows, producing 1.08 million litres annually.
  • There are estimated to be 85 dairy farms in the region.
  • The industry directly employs 630 people on farms and in the processing sector.
  • There are 2 dairy factories in the region including milk processing, dairy product manufacturing and milk collection plants.
  • Dairy Farmers collects the majority of milk in the region with the small exception of organic processing.
  • The estimated value of farm milk production in 2007/08 from the region was $32m.
  • The FOB value of dairy product exports produced from the region is estimated to be $8m.
