Dairy in the region

  • South Australia is an important dairying region, accounting for almost 7% of Australia’s milk production.
  • Around 354 South Australian dairy farmers produce around 600 million litres of milk annually.
  • The average South Australian farm milks around 350-400 cows, producing 1.53 million litres annually.
  • The dairy industry directly employs around 1,550 people on farms and a further 425 in the processing sector.
  • There are 17 dairy factories in the region including milk processing, dairy product manufacturing and milk collection plants.
  • Major companies operating in the region include Dairy Farmers, National Foods and Warrnambool Cheese & Butter.
  • The estimated value of farm milk production in 2007/08 from the region was $290m.
  • Exports from South Australia are valued at $40 million. A significant percentage of SA milk is also processed in and exported from Victoria.
