Murray Goulburn

Murray Goulburn Co-operative (MGC) has successfully conducted the first Australian milk company pilot program to explore the realities of reporting on environmental management on farms, and developing the technology to make this progress burden free for dairy farmers. The initial 18- month project in Gippsland's Yarram region received funding from the Australian Governmment's National Landcare Program.

Based on the success of the pilot program, the company has expanded its Farm Environment Program to new areas of Gippsland, the North East and Western Victoria. Farmers in the program work with suppliers to report upon on-farm environmental management using two internet tools, eFarmer and MGF@rm. While the program aims to clarify nutrient and effluent management issues and solutions, participants have found that it offers many avenues for exploring new ideas and support to implement on farm management projects in other parts of their business.

There are at least 20 Farmer Profiles, that describe how and why the farmer's are involved in the program, examples of which are on the left of this page.
