Regional Dairying for Tomorrow Coordinators

Participation in industry Dairying for Tomorrow (DfT) programs run by DFT coordinators has brought high levels of on farm adoption of environmental initiatives, with 84% of dairy farmer participants taking action. The environmental outcomes from these actions are improved water quality, enhanced biodiversity, reduced soil loss and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

Regional Dairying for Tomorrow coordinators are capacity builders, skilled at strengthening and coordinating industry and regional NRM initiatives while improving relationships between regional NRM bodies, NRM agencies and the industry.

Since their appointment about 1500 (20%) of Australian dairy farmers have participated in Regional DfT coordinator initiated NRM and Climate Change activities and over 550 service providers have either attended DfT activities or been involved in the delivery of DfT programs. This level of involvement has significantly increased the capacity of the industry to implement and manage sustainable farming systems.

Funding for the Regional Dairying for Tomorrow Coordinators was initially provided by the Australian Government Sustainable Industries Initiative programme (2005-2008). The positions are currently being funded by Dairy Australia and other industry stakeholders.
